The first gold certificates were issued during the Civil War in 1863, and were redeemable in exchange for deposits of gold. Then due to the Gold Confiscation Order of 1933 issued by President Franklin Roosevelt following a national banking crisis, it became illegal to hold most forms of gold. As a result many antique coin and currency pieces were destroyed, making some difficult to find today. The 1906 was the Last Gold Certificate series (issued until 1922). It was one of the most beautiful currency designs ever. This giant (7 3/8" x 3 1/8") certificate redeemable for gold coin, was nicknamed the "Technicolor" note. This is because of the rich orange/gold seals on the obverse, and the equally beautiful orange/gold color hues on the reverse.
